Vaginismus
This is an involuntary contraction (spasm) of the lower vaginal muscle resulting from a woman’s unconscious desire to prevent penetration. The pain of vaginismus may prevent penetration often resulting in unconsummated marriage. Some woman with vaginismus enjoys clitoral orgasm. Vaginismus is a learnt response often due to Dyspareunia and causes pain if coitus is attempted. Even after the cause of Dyspareunia has been removed memory of the pain can perpetuate vaginismus. Other causes are fear of pregnancy, of being controlled by a man, of losing control or of being hurt during coitus (a misconception that intercourse is necessarily violent) if a woman has such fears vaginismus is usually primary which is life long.
