Impotence
Impotence or Erectile Dysfunction means that the penis doesn’t get hard for Intercourse. The man cannot get or maintain an erection. This condition is prevalent throughout the world.
Major causes of this are:
Physiological Factors:
- Vascular or blood vessel disease: Erection is caused by the building blood in the shaft of the penis, poor blood flow for e.g. from trauma or atherosclerosis. This can result in erection problems
- Nerve damage (Neuropathy) Nerves must be working normally for a man to keep an erection. Nerve damage can result from diabetes, damage to the spinal cord etc.
Psychological factors
- Depression or anxiety may also cause erectile dysfunction. Embarrassment of performance can make a physical problem worse.
- Psychological causes are found most commonly in young males.
Medication for high blood pressure, depression, heart disease and prostrate cancer can also cause this problem.
Hormonal factors:
- Abnormal levels of certain hormones such a testosterone, thyroid and pituitary hormone known as prolacton can interfere with sex drive. This is an uncommon cause of erectile dysfunction.
